What is FSSAI Registration

FSSAI Registration and Licensing is important and, mandatory for every entity for Starting a food business in India. FSSAI license is compulsory irrespective of the turnover of food products. Whether you are a manufacturer, trader, wholesaler, retailers, distributors, Re-packers, exporter or importer of food products or supplying raw materials to manufacturer then mandatorily you need to obtain 14 digit FSSAI License or FSSAI Registration Number. As per the Food packaging guidelines, FSSAI Registration Number must be printed on every food packages & License should be displayed on the premises of FBO. It has been made mandatory for all food business by ministry of health and family welfare to get this license. It focuses on the promotion and protection of the public health through the regulation of the food safety

Types of FSSAI License

There is three type of categories with different kind of annual turnover

FSSAI basic registration

A business with annual turnover is 10 lakhs is not necessary for a business to get FSSAI license for starting a business, mere registration is sufficient. There is no issuance of FSSAI license number as the product may or may not be registered.

It can be upgraded to the sales license as the sale graph increase.

FSSAI State license

For a business with an annual turnover of INR 12 lakhs to INR 20 crores. The FSSAI registration number of 14 digits shall be printed on the back of a product. For those who have branches in different states, you are required to get a state license for each one of them.

FSSAI Central license

For the business with annual turnover more than INR 20 crores Those who having branches in more than one state or doing an export/import of food products then the central license is compulsory.

Who all require obtaining Food License?

FSSAI License is mandatory for all Food Business Operators including all manufacturer, Re-Packer, trader, retailer, wholesaler, supplier, Transporters, importer & exporter etc.

What is the difference between State & Central License?

Type of License depends on the nature of the business and its annual turnover/production. An FBO can refer to our above license categorization to identify the correct License.

What is the maximum penalty for breach of regulations related to the labelling of food items?

As per FSSAI Act, a penalty up to Rs. 10 lac may be levied.

‘I operate a business from home and I do not have a huge business why should I get FSSAI license?’

In that case, you still need to register under FSSAI, however you shall only need basic registration.

Do I need separate FSSAI Registration if i have two ice cream parlors in the same city?

FSSAI license that is issued is always location specific. If you have multiple business places you need to apply for separate registration for each location.

What is the validity period of Import license?

for a period of 1 to 5 years as chosen by the Food Business Operator, from the date of issue of license subject to remittance of fee applicable for the period and compliance with all conditions of license.

Do importers required to file annual return?

Yes, the Food Importer shall file Annual returns as prescribed under FSS (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulation, 2011.

FSSAI number provides the registration details

FSSAI logo will be displayed by the brand owner with his license number on the label of the food package.

The importer shall display FSSAI logo and license number along with the name and address of the importer in the case of the imported food product.

B. Documents Required for FSSAI State License

Declaration Form.
Aadhaar card of the Business owner.

MOA/AOA / Partnership deed (As Apply).
Company GST No
Detail about the business activity & List of food products.
Authority letter in the favour of the consultant.
NOC from Property owner long with rent agreement.
Electricity bills of business / Factory / Warehouse.
In case of Transporter applying for FSSAI license need to provide RC of vehicles along with a declaration.
NOC from Brand owner in case you are doing re-packaging business.

All the documents of B part also
Audited balance sheet in case Food Manufacture is applying for a Central license
IEC Code in case FSSAI license is to be applied for Export / Import.
